the children followed it out of town
and down the narrow paths lined with thorns and dirt
and over the rocky hills and through the rivers
and when it was found
there was only a knocking on the wall of the rocks
it had no pattern
it knew nothing
and the hinges had been broken off
and the tracks had been covered up
and dried grass had covered the
entrance to the cave
where they slept
